When attending or participating in athletic events on and off-campus, all AIS student athletes are considered ambassadors for AIS. They are expected to model the school’s core values of Justice, Knowledge and Love. This means behaving properly and in accordance with the expectations of the school.
All student athletes will be expected to attend all practices and coaching sessions.
They will be prepared and ready with any, and all appropriate uniforms and or equipment.
They will maintain the cleanliness of any school-issued uniform or equipment and return this to the Athletics Office at the end of the season.
Student athletes will look after and respect all school-issued uniforms and equipment.
Any non-returned, lost or damaged uniform will be charged to the student/family. Acceptable wear and tear will be considered.
Student athletes must consistently demonstrate dedication and sportsmanship.
They will follow and abide by the rules outlined in the AIS Student Handbook.
They must fill in ALL student permission Google forms by the assigned deadlines.
Student athletes should prepare properly for all activities (i.e. proper equipment, uniform, water bottle etc...)
Student athletes with disciplinary issues may not be allowed to represent AIS in interscholastic competition.
When taking school transportation, student athletes must be on time. School buses operate on a very strict schedule and will depart on time. If a student is late for the bus he or she will not be able to participate in that scheduled match or practice.
Student athletes experiencing academic difficulties may not be allowed to participate in practice or matches based on discussions with the Athletic Director (AD) and Principal.
Student athletes who are not academically responsible (i.e. missing assignments, under performing on tests and quizzes) may not be excused from class time for the activity they are currently engaged in. The AD and principals will review participation in events.
Student athletes are required to complete all assignments missed due to early dismissal in consultation with their teachers.
Students who are absent for a whole school day for any reason are not allowed to participate in after-school activities. Students who come late to school after an illness or other excused activity may be granted permission to participate after discussion with the Principal. It is extremely important that students acknowledge and accept the importance of being a dedicated member of a team. Therefore, students must attend a minimum of 80% of all practices, games and team meetings. This includes excused and unexcused absences. It is vital that each student inform their coach in person of their absence from practice prior to the start of the session.
Students who have conflicts with their extracurricular commitments may be granted an excused absence for certain circumstances. Permission must be granted by the coach before the practice session, in order for the excused absence to be issued.
Possible reasons for excused absences:
A legitimate medical excuse, with documentation.
Unavoidable clashes with an academic subject (i.e., make-up tests) or another school activity.
Involvement in a field trip. (It is the responsibility of the student to inform coaches prior to the event).
Possible crossover of sport seasons.
Other reasons to be evaluated at the coach’s/Athletic Director’s discretion.
A student that misses a practice, and the absence is not deemed to be excused, will have the following action taken:
First Occurrence — May affect participation in a match in the immediate future.
Second Occurrence — May affect participation on the team, as determined by the coach.
Continued Occurrence — Will result in dismissal from the team.
Students that have an unexcused absence from school (for any reason) may not participate in after-school athletic activities on that day.
AIS Middle and High School students are able to compete for the school in four age categories: U12; U14; U16; and U20.
MS competes in ISSFHK and friendly games with other local international schools. For MS competitions, participants need to be younger than 12 or 14 years old, on 1 August of the current school year. Participation on MS teams is limited to Middle School students.
HS competes in ISSFHK and friendly games with other local international schools. For HS competitions, participants need to be younger than 16 or 20 years old on 1 August of the current school year.
Students who are U14 in MS may participate on the U16 or U20 team, if the following criteria are fulfilled:
The coach identifies a strong need for players;
The student is identified as a significant contributor during the try-out process;
The student does not move a HS student off of the team;
The student must display the physical, academic, and social maturity to participate at the higher level as evaluated by the coach, Athletic Director, and Principal.
Students are to be in full uniform when participating in matches.
Uniforms are provided by the school and must be worn in all competitions; however, students must purchase items that are of a personal nature (i.e. badminton rackets, shin pads, soccer boots, etc...).
If teams wish to purchase their own ‘practice’ jerseys, this must first be approved by the AIS Athletic Director.
Athletic Uniforms are to be worn exclusively during competitions, not in PE classes or during practices.
Uniforms will be distributed and collected by the PE office at pre-scheduled times and dates.
As mentioned earlier, students are responsible for the replacement cost of any lost or damaged uniforms or equipment. Failure to meet these obligations will result in a withdrawal of services.
The PE office will not be able to provide a uniform to a student whose parents have not yet completed the Google Parent Permission Form and student contract.
If a uniform is damaged or lost, then students will be responsible to pay a replacement cost of $250HKD
Students are not able to participate in future sport seasons until their current season uniform has been returned or they have paid for the replacement cost.
Students will return their uniform to their coach after the last game of the season. The coach will collect them all together directly after the last game.
Most of our sports teams practice at venues that are located offsite in the Kowloon Tong - Kowloon Bay areas. The usual commute time is approximately 15 - 20 minutes. Some matches may be played at other schools within the greater Hong Kong - Kowloon area and at other non-school operated venues.
U12 have their games on Mondays and practice Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
U14 have their games on Tuesdays and practice Wednesdays or Thursdays.
U16 have their games on Wednesdays and practice Tuesdays or Thursdays.
U20 have their games on Thursdays and practice Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
On-Site activity sessions generally begin at 3:15pm and end at 4:45pm. Off-site activity sessions for football and touch rugby begin at 3:15pm and end at 4:30pm. Off-site activity sessions for volleyball, basketball, touch rugby, and badminton may begin around 3:20-3:30 pm and end at 5:00pm.
Sports teams generally involve a commitment of 2 sessions per week, including games and practices. Games may run until approximately 6:00 pm. On very rare occasions, a game may run until approximately 7:00 pm, based on the availability of other schools’ facilities. In some instances, where matches are played at distant venues, teams may not arrive back at AIS until approximately 7:00 pm.
U12, U14, U16, and U20 teams will practice both onsite and offsite as long as there is offsite availability. Football and Touch Rugby teams will always practice offsite. Swim teams will always practice onsite.
AIS will provide bus transportation to and from all games and practices within Hong Kong; however, in some instances it may be more practical to have students and coaches use the MTR.
Students are expected to travel with their team to and from all games and practices. Students may depart from a practice or match venue if their parents have completed the Google Parent Permission Form.
Buses generally pick up or drop off in front of the 125 Gate.
All athletes are expected to be in their respective sport uniform prior to departing for any league or friendly competition.
The Captain may be directly selected by the coach, or the players on the team may vote for Captain(s). A team captain is more than just a talented player; they are the leader, motivator, and representative of the team. In a team, the captain's role is particularly significant, as they are not only responsible for on-field performance but also for shaping the team's culture and acting as a role model for their peers.
It is the responsibility of all Team Captains to:
Exhibit leadership skills on and off the field.
Display a positive attitude and respect for coaches, fellow athletes, officials, and the athletic program.
Possess a good knowledge of the sport.
Demonstrate tactical and technical skills at an above-average level.
Exhibit mental discipline.
Assist the coach willingly, to remain dedicated to the activity, and to enhance team spirit.
An AIS sports team can choose to have one or two high school students to become team managers. Student managers play an invaluable and often under-recognized role in the success of a team. They are the unsung heroes who handle the behind-the-scenes work that allows coaches to focus on strategy and players to focus on their performance. Their contributions are essential to the smooth operation and overall success of the team.
It is the responsibility of all Team Managers to:
Track data and match reports during matches and games.
Take photos and videos during matches and games.
Attend games and not practices (and will receive recognition of this on their report card).
The Hong Kong Observatory has a weather app, and you are encouraged to download it to your phone, if you participate in an outdoor sport.
Our coaches are responsible for the safety of our athletes. If at an off-site outdoor practice, they will use their best judgment with respect to safety. Coaches are required to follow the safety instructions of any park or school official when at practices or matches, as other schools may have different rules than AIS.
In the event of inclement weather that requires the cancellation of a practice or game, we will notify all affected students as follows:
For our U12 and U14 teams, we will send an email to both the students and their parents.
For our U16 and U20 teams, we will send an email directly to the students.
Start to prepare for careful observation as soon as you see dark thunder clouds gather on the horizon. Remember that lightning can strike “out of the blue” without warning.
Stop all outdoor activities and seek shelter immediately when you see lightning and hear thunder within five seconds of the lightning bolt.
Take shelter if you can hear thunder or see lightning. Do not wait for the rain to fall before you act. Never use an umbrella in a lightning storm, or take shelter under a tree or light standard.
Stay away from all metal objects.
Generally, all outdoor activities are canceled or suspended during Red or Black Rain. Matches will be canceled by 12:00 pm, if possible, to allow visiting schools the opportunity to cancel buses and notify administration, coaches, and athletes.
During Amber Rain or regular rain, outdoor activities may proceed at the coach’s or hosting school’s discretion.
All student athlete dismissals (Grade 5-12) from locations off the AIS campus require parental permission and full understanding that parents are assuming responsibility for their child once he/she is released by the coach. Once a student has been accepted onto an AIS sports team, their parents will receive an email with a Parent Permission Google Form - Athletics Dismissal if they wish to give permission for their child or children to be dismissed from a venue off campus. They must complete the google form to grant their child permission to leave from locations off campus.
Please note:
When parents attend the game and wish to take their child home with them (Grades 5-8), they may do so only after checking in with the AIS coach, and before leaving the venue.
Parents who would like to pick up their child from the game must be on time. If the bus is ready to leave, and a parent has not yet arrived for pickup, the student will leave on the bus with the team and will need to be collected at the school.
For competitions held on Hong Kong Island, students must be dropped off at Admiralty MTR exit A after the game. Parents/guardians are required to pick up their child at this location; self-dismissal is not permitted.
For competitions that take place in Kowloon or the New Territories, students will be dropped off at school. If parents sign the permission form, students in these grade levels have the option for self- dismissal from campus.
